Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities Board of Directors Statement on the Death of Sonya Massey

The CCD Board of Directors condemns the murder of Sonya Massey at the hands of a Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy in Illinois. Sonya Massey called 911 to report a potential prowler around her home.

DREDF’s Statement on Governor Newsom’s Order on Encampment Removal

Governor Gavin Newsom, emboldened by the Supreme Court’s decision in City of Grants Pass Oregon v. Johnson, has issued an executive order to clear homeless encampments across California. The order will have a particularly devastating impact on disabled people.

DREDF Urges Ninth Circuit to Reverse District Court Order Finding Regional Centers and Their Vendors Not Covered by the ADA

DREDF filed a motion with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeal seeking leave to participate as amicus curiae in Guthrey v. Alta California Regional Center, a case that will decide whether regional centers and their vendors are subject to the anti-discrimination provisions of the ADA.

DREDF Responds to Supreme Court’s Decision in Moyle v. United States

By refusing to issue an opinion on the merits of the case, the Court failed to clarify when doctors in states with abortion bans can legally provide emergency abortion care. Because of this, thousands of pregnant people may not be able to access health-preserving or life-saving abortion care.

Federal Court Issues Historic Order Ending Race-Based Policing by School District

On June 28, 2024, Federal Court Judge Jesus Bernal issued a historic permanent injunction in C.B. v. Moreno Valley Unified School District et al., in which he ordered MVUSD to make extensive district-wide changes, as well as reduce its reliance on school police and security officers to respond to students with disabilities.

In a deeply disturbing 6-3 opinion, the United States Supreme Court today ruled that fining and jailing people experiencing homelessness for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go is not unconstitutional.

Settlement Targets Discrimination against Marginalized Students

The State of California will now be required to strengthen its monitoring and oversight of school districts to prevent systemic discrimination against Black students, children with disabilities and English learners, according to a settlement announced today.
