Landlords use pet screening companies to ensure that tenants’ pets are well-behaved, healthy, and well-cared for. However, assistance animals used by people with disabilities are not considered “pets.” Landlords cannot require disabled people to complete pet screening procedures to live with an assistance animal.

Ann Clinton loves playing bingo, but her retirement community won't let her join her friends to play the game since she moved from an independent living apartment to the skilled nursing floor of the Redstone Village Continuing Care Retirement Community in Huntsville, Alabama.
